Easy step-by-step instructions for changing a flat tire
Pull over to a flat, stable surface away from traffic. Turn on hazard lights and engage the parking brake.
Stay visible - use hazard lights and reflective triangles if you have them
Locate your spare tire, car jack, and lug wrench. They're usually in the trunk or under the car.
Remove the hubcap if needed. Use the lug wrench to loosen (don't fully remove yet) the lug nuts by turning counterclockwise.
Place the jack under the car's jack point (check your manual). Raise the car until the flat tire is off the ground.
Never put any part of your body under a jacked-up car
Now fully remove the loosened lug nuts. Pull the tire straight toward you to remove it from the wheel hub.
Align the spare tire with the wheel hub holes and push it onto the wheel hub. Replace the lug nuts and tighten by hand.
Use the jack to lower the car until the spare tire touches the ground but still supports some weight.
Use the lug wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts in a star or crisscross pattern. Lower the car completely.
Check that the spare tire has enough air pressure. Store your flat tire and tools back in the car.
